The defendant, represented by Stephen Lee, had pleaded not guilty to assault in circumstances where, if convicted, custody was a likely outcome. Key evidence was served late by the Crown Prosecution Service the day before the trial. The new evidence was examined in detail and as a result, strenuous representations were made to the prosecuting lawyer on the day of the trial, shortly before the trial was due to start. Despite all prosecution witnesses being in attendance and willing to give evidence, the Crown Prosecution Service agreed with Stephen’s representations and offered no evidence. The defendnat was therefore found not guilty and the case against him dismissed.
After the hearing the defendant told Stephen that he was extremely relieved not to have to give evidence in his case and described the Sheppards Solicitors handling of his case as “brilliant”.
Stephen undertakes both legally aided and private client work.
